Are you a voyeur?

From Elizabeth Heidner:

Did anyone else miss out on the HBO Voyeur project? Like so many other things, I stumbled upon it by chasing links through other websites (and nearly a year late). Apparently it ran last summer as a multimedia campaign produced by BBDO New york. According to the wikipedia site for it (link below), the project took about a year to create, and cost between $7-10 million dollars. Ouch?

It’s a campaign to provoke interest in HBO, on all levels. HBO’s websites, HBO’s mobile platform, and, of course, HBO’s television channels. I’ve watched a few of the videos left on the now frozen blog that accompanied the campaign. (www.thestorygetsdeeper.com) There were apparently character-blogs to be scattered on various blogging sites, accounts for the characters on flickr.com and youtube. The campaign even opened with bang, projecting some of the videos on to the sides of the buildings in New York, to a supposedly eery soundtrack. As very little in advertising is left random, the buildings, are naturally at the addresses where all 8 characters, and their lives are supposed to cross.

Personally, from the bits of the videos I’ve watched, it’s a little bit creepy. I’m not going to lie, I like to people watch, so the idea of a campaign devoted to the idea of voyeurism was interesting to me. On the other hand, people watching is done in a public place, like a park, where no one is really alone. This campaign sort of blows that concept away. The idea here is to see what people do when they think they’re alone. But couldn’t they have made just one of the lives of the character’s “normal?” I mean, we all do weird and quarky things when we’re alone, but do we all commit murder or adultery or have a baby on someone else’s pool table? It’s seems more fitting for a prime-time show than an ad campaign. But maybe that was HBO’s point. I’m a little curious to know if there was supposed to be a climax or a clear end to this campaign, and I wonder just how successful this expensive campaign was in increasing HBO’s viewership?

I do think BBDO did an amazing job in its use of multimedia for one campaign.

Thoughts?
